Australia warns against China’s decision to “normalize dangerous actions” in territorial disputes

AustraliaForeign Minister Penny Wong warned against what she said was PorcelainCanberra’s move to “normalize dangerous actions” in territorial disputes with other nations, reiterating Canberra’s previous calls to handle such issues through dialogue.

At a forum at Singapore’s Fullerton Hotel on Tuesday, Wong pledged that Canberra would support the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to ensure processes were in place to reduce tensions.

“We also see, in our region, China’s efforts to normalize dangerous actions toward the Philippines and Taiwan, and we have consistently articulated our views on the importance of peace and stability in the region. South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait,” Wong said at the event organized by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.

He stressed that “now more than ever” “prevention mechanisms are needed to provide transparency and peace of mind.”

Beijing views Taiwan as a renegade province that should be reintegrated into mainland control, by force if necessary. While many nations, including the United States, do not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent state, they oppose any use of force to alter the status quo.

Wong’s comments come after Beijing and Canberra resumed bilateral economic talks in September after a seven-year hiatus.
