Trump attacks Obama when he says the United States should not get involved in the Syrian conflict: “It’s not our fight”

Donald Trump criticized former President Barack Obama on Saturday as he delved into the ongoing conflict in Syria, saying the United States should not and should not have gotten involved in the matter.

In line with his isolationist foreign policy, the president-elect wrote in Truth Social that the United States “should have nothing to do with” the situation in Syria, where rebels are currently trying to seize the capital in an attempt to overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

“THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY. DON’T GET INVOLVED!” Trump wrote.

However, at the same time, Trump blamed Obama for not intervening in the 2013 conflict, when the Russian-backed government used chemical weapons as a form of attack, something Obama initially said was the “red line” that would lead the United States United to get out of the conflict. involved.

“This is where former President Obama refused to fulfill his commitment to protect the RED LINE IN THE SAND, and all hell broke loose, with Russia intervening,” Trump wrote.

Russia, an ally of al-Assad, intervened in the Syrian conflict years ago. However, Trump said that due to the current state of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Moscow cannot focus its attention this time.

“Syria’s opposition fighters, in an unprecedented measure, have completely taken over numerous cities, in a highly coordinated offensive, and are now on the outskirts of Damascus, obviously preparing to take a very big step toward overthrowing Assad,” Trump wrote.

“Russia, because it is so busy in Ukraine, and with the loss there of more than 600,000 troops, seems unable to stop this literal march through Syria, a country it has protected for years.”

The president-elect said there was “never much benefit” in Syria for Russia “other than making Obama look really stupid.”

“In any case, Syria is a disaster, but it is not our friend, AND THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY. DON’T GET INVOLVED!” he added.

Trump’s comments came while he was in Paris meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron in his first return to the world stage since his election victory.

The conflict in Syria has raged since 2011. The government, led by al-Assad, has been a central part of the situation, having used brutality against peaceful protesters during the Arab Spring.

Since then, the Syrian government has relied on its ally with Russia, Iran, Hezbollah and others to stay in power.

However, those allies, like Russia, have had their attention diverted by other crises, giving the insurgents the opportunity to press forward in hopes of toppling Al-Assad.

Over the past week, conflict has escalated in the country and rebels have begun seizing much of the northwestern territory in an attempt to overthrow al-Assad.

So far, the insurgents, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have captured land in the city of Aleppo and several Damascus suburbs, marking the first time opposition forces have reached the outskirts of the capital since 2018.

The Syrian army has reportedly withdrawn from several Damascus suburbs, indicating that Al-Assad is losing control over parts of the country.

With Trump returning to the White House in just over a month, it seems unlikely that the United States will get involved. The president-elect and his allies have taken an isolationist approach to foreign conflicts, believing that the United States should not get involved unless it has a direct interest in them.
