SNOW, COLD AND DANGEROUS SLIPS ON THE ROAD

SNOW, COLD AND DANGEROUS SLIPS ON THE ROAD

Today, tonight and tomorrow morning is a FIRST WEATHER DAY ALERT for snow, intense cold and strong icy winds. An arctic cold front will pass through our area today, bringing a quick period of wintry weather into the weekend.

Snow Chances…Scattered snow showers could occur at any time today, but I am concerned about possible snow flurries activity this afternoon with the arctic front. Storms are those that have a burst of heavy snow and wind that can cause low visibility and travel interruptions. The snowfall will end this afternoon. Snowfall totals will range from a dusting to perhaps up to 1.5 inches. Stay alert to rapidly changing conditions if you are traveling.

Temperatures…we will stay reasonably stable in the mid to upper 20s through the morning and early afternoon, but temperatures will drop quickly into the overnight commute in the wake of the Arctic front. Tonight’s lows will be single digits above and below zero. Thursday’s highs under mostly sunny skies will struggle into the 10s in the Fox Valley and Lakeshore, with colder single digits continuing to the northwest.

Winds and chills…it will mostly feel like 10 degrees above zero today, but bitter wind chills of -15 to -30 are expected later tonight and Thursday morning. Freezing can occur in less than 30 minutes. Wind chills will remain below freezing all day Thursday, but will not be as extreme in the late afternoon once winds begin to blow east. Some wind gusts later today, tonight and Thursday morning may be around 30 to 35 mph from WNW.

Clear, cold weather continues Thursday night with lows either side of zero again. Fortunately, winds will be much lighter overall. It will take all day on Friday, but I hope we can get into the 20s by the afternoon. Friday will be variably cloudy and calm, just cold.

Another forecaster on Saturday will likely produce snow in the morning followed by a mix of snow and rain in the afternoon, but it will depend on how quickly we warm up. Highs should be in the 30s. A dusting of a few inches of snow could fall, with some of the highest totals returning to the northwest Fox Valley by the end of the day. That’s the latest trend… but it’s something to keep in mind as there could be some disruption to travel again during the first part of the weekend. There will also be a bit of a breeze again.

Sunday is shaping up to be mostly cloudy, calm and seasonally mild with highs near 40. Another system early next week could produce some rain, snow and breezes.
