Colby Covington explains lack of trash talk with ‘Nobody’ Joaquin Buckley

If you know Colby Covington, you know that UFC Tampa is not your typical build-up to a fight.

Former UFC champion denounces ‘bastard’ LeBron James for viral ‘Diddy Party’ comment

Between his return on a Fight Night card, which means no press conference, and a short-notice call to fight this weekend, Covington will do most of the talking in the Octagon when he faces Joaquin Buckley in five rounds or less.

Covington normally would have attacked his opponent as he has done so many times before, but instead of attacking Buckley directly, the former interim champion took more shots at the likes of LeBron James, Jon Jones and Khamzat Chimaev in the midfield. day.

Of course, Covington had some things to say about Buckley. He promised to show the No. 9 contender that there are levels to Saturday’s game, but nothing to the point of “Diddy parties,” as he mentioned with James.

So why is the trash-talking Covington taking it relatively easy (or easier) on Buckley this time?

“It’s irrelevant,” Covington said of Buckley in an interview with ‘The MMA guru‘. “He’s an absolute nobody. I haven’t done any research on him and I didn’t care. He should be happy to have the privilege of fighting me.

“I just didn’t do any research and it was on short notice, so I was scrambling to get my training in order and make sure I was in good shape to come here on three weeks’ notice. I had more important things to worry about than this idiot “

Covington, 36, also said he makes more money in poker tournaments than Buckley does fighting, but on a more serious note, the three-time title challenger knows the task at hand with Buckley, a much younger opponent and perhaps hungrier than he is used to. face 30 years old.

“He’s definitely a dangerous guy,” Covington said of Buckley. “He’s very athletic, he throws big punches and he’s powerful. He’s very confident and the most dangerous thing about him is that he has nothing to lose. He has a lot to gain fighting a guy like me.

“It’s dangerous because he wants everything I have. He wants the lifestyle I have… He wants to come take everything I have and make a name for himself. I’m going to turn him down.”
