In Ghana, Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution requires the Presidential Emoluments Committee to decide on the remuneration of the President and Vice President. Although the current amounts are not usually made public, there are reliable estimates and publications that allow us to know their remuneration.

The president’s pay

The president of Ghana receives an annual salary of about 934,800 Ghana cedis, or more than $76,000, according to the latest projections for 2024. However, this sum only covers the base salary; excludes other benefits and allowances such as housing, transportation, security, and health insurance. These benefits significantly increase the President’s overall compensation package.

Vice President Salary

The vice president’s salary is generally set at a lower level compared to that of the president, but is still substantial. This figure aligns with the comparable salaries of cabinet ministers, who in 2016 earned around 22,000 cedis monthly. Adjusted for inflation and subsequent salary revisions, the vice president’s income has likely increased over the years.

Allowances and Benefits

In addition to their salaries, both the President and Vice President enjoy a variety of allowances and benefits, including:

1.Housing: Official State residences are provided for them and their families.

2. Transportation: They have access to official vehicles for their official and personal use.

3. Security: Both officials are entitled to 24/7 security personnel to ensure their safety.

4. Medical Care: Comprehensive medical care is provided for them and their immediate family members.

Retirement benefits

After leaving office, the President and Vice President are entitled to generous retirement benefits. These include pensions, ongoing security benefits, official vehicles, healthcare coverage and sometimes even accommodation. These benefits are determined by the Emoluments Committee and remain a topic of public interest and debate.

While these salaries and benefits are considered high by Ghanaian standards, they are often a source of public debate, especially in light of economic challenges, public sector pay disparities, and calls for greater transparency and accountability in the government spending.
