Passerby hit while checking on others in accident

KENT COUNTY, MI – A man was seriously injured Tuesday, Jan. 21, when he was struck by a vehicle while checking on those involved in a previous crash, sheriff’s deputies said.

The 46-year-old Middleville man was alert but suffered serious injuries, Kent County sheriff’s deputies said.

He was hospitalized.

The accident occurred around 9:50 a.m. in the 500 block of 100th Street SW in Byron Township, west of US 131.

The injured man had gotten out of his vehicle to check on the occupants of a Chevrolet Traverse that crashed. He was hit by a Honda Pilot after the driver, a 32-year-old Hastings woman, lost control of her vehicle, police said.

Emergency workers treated the injured man before he was taken to a local hospital.

The sheriff’s Highway Safety Unit is investigating.

The Sheriff’s Office said motorists should slow down, allow more time for travel and be alert during dangerous driving conditions.

“Remember, if one vehicle has gone off the road, others are likely off the road as well,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
