Jane Dodds says he will continue as the leader of Welsh Liberal Democrats

The leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said that she dropped survivors of abuse when she took six months to organize a meeting to discuss a historical case against a bishop.

Jane Dodds was under pressure from her own party leader in the United Kingdom, Ed Davey, last year, when criticism of her behavior in the Church of England resurfaced last November.

In an interview with Wales radio breakfastThe Senedd (MS) member reiterated a previous apology, but could not remember why the meeting was not organized to discuss a case of abuse.

Dodds said he would continue as a leader and admitted that his relationship with the United Kingdom leader had “changed” and “would take the time to repair.”

Dodds was criticized in a report that analyzed Abuse committed by the late Bishop Hubert Victor Whitsey, who died in 1987and how the accusations were handled by the Church.

It was discovered that Whitsey had committed “terrible acts” against vulnerable children, adolescents and adults between 1966 and 1981.

In 2016, Dodds served as the National Social Work Manager for the National Protection of the England Church (NST).

In January 2016, Dodds had said that he would convene a meeting of officials to discuss the accusations made by an individual known as M2.

The meeting did not take place until six months later, in July.

The report said that the NST had not followed the orientation to hold a meeting regarding the accusations of M2 within “as short as possible a delay”, and that the Church “disappointed”, in addition to having been disappointed by the Church “For many years before”.

The researchers could not talk to Dodds during the course of their work. In response to his findings, he admitted “clear deficiencies”, but could not remember the case.

The report was published in 2020, but the participation of DODDS was not widely known until the Nation Nation news website reported it. Cymru at the end of 2024.

In an interview with Laura Kuensberg of the BBC, Davey asked the Welsh leader to reflect on his position.

‘Justice was delayed’

Dodds said he had worked in the Church of England for just under 12 months.

“When you are on paper like that, and I have been working in child protection for about 25 years, you are operating with several cases and you have to prioritize,” he said.

“It was really clear at that time that I don’t remember the reasons why he took me for six months to organize a meeting.

“Justice was delayed for those survivors. They had presented 30 years after their abuser had died. They were brave and brave.

“I disappointed them and apologized immediately. I apologized in November, I apologize now.”

She had been a candidate for the National Assembly for Wales in the elections of May 2016. Dodds denied neglecting daily work for her political ambitions.

“When you are campaigning as a candidate, you must keep the wolf in the door, you have to work, you have to maintain a salary. And so I was doing both.

“That is the situation with many candidates, so I don’t accept that.”

‘I’m going to continue’

Welsh liberal democrats are governed separately from the party on the other side of the border.

Dodds told BBC Wales said that at the time of Davey’s criticism he had spoken with “several people”, and said that the leadership of the Galeses Board of the party had “expressed his confidence in me.”

“I’m going to remain a leader,” he said.

She admitted that the relationship with Davey had “changed.”

Dodds added: “If you have a difference of opinion with a family member or a friend, then it takes time to repair, but we are moving forward in that.”
